MY MAIN GOAL AS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL IS TO STRENGTHEN THE ORDINARY CITIZEN.
My goals when I ran in 2025's Special Election have not changed.
They are:
Get to the Principle of a bill.
Policy is discussed often and sometimes may seem like the most important thing. When we get to the core of a policy or a bill, we will find that there is an underlying Principle:
Limited Government.
Expansion of Power.
Overreach.
Compassion through Spending.
Fear.
Freedom.
Transparency.
Protection. etc.
It is in the Principle that we find the main point--or the purpose of a bill, and then we can figure out if it is the Proper Role of Government to do.
Connect YOU with Government.
People serving in office are elected by CEOs of this country:
The People.
YOU!
And yet, after voting is done, the CEOs think their job is done.
I. NEED. YOU.
at the Capitol during the Legislative Session,
reading bills,
speaking in Committees,
requesting to sit with Legislators on the Floor
and discussing next courses of action on issues that matter to you.
During my time at the Capitol, having YOU there--touchstones to HOME was VITAL to me. I held a Legislative Boot Camp last year to help us go through the process of how things are done at the Capitol, and I will do it again this year. I hope you will come.
Come and learn, and then come again and bring others, so that when Legislative Session starts again, we're ready to go.
Self-Advocacy is necessary for Freedom.
In other words, Freedom begins with ME.
Freedom begins with YOU.
It doesn't begin with Government.
It begins with us doing our own work of
reading the bills for ourselves,
understanding what it means,
and then either coming to the Capitol
or getting online and speaking to these things in Committees, because
the more that the CEOs (this means YOU) are involved, the more influence YOU have on your elected officials, and not just special interest groups, agencies and organizations or lobbyists.
So few attend, and ironically, the Ordinary Citizen--the CEOs of the State, are the majority and ought to have the most powerful voice in the State.
When we do our own work of reading bills and speaking to them in person at the Capitol or online from home, we can correct errors and share the full story, instead of getting second-hand news from news or social media outlets, because "we were there".
The more we know for ourselves, the less easy we are to push around, and especially by sources who may not share our interests.
We must begin trusting ourselves again, and that can be possible when we do our own work.
I will be coming around, knocking on your doors, and I'm excited to meet you and answer questions you may have.
As an elected official, I held trainings last summer, where we taught about the life of a bill, how to use the legislative website, and also taught about the communication program that my sister and members of House District 51 created, and that I used this recent Legislative Session. I received over 200 submissions from you this past Session (thank you!), and I look forward to receiving more from you.
If you are open to having me come to your home and visiting with you and your neighbors, please reach out at leahforutah@gmail.com, or text me at (801) 796-2356. I don't answer phone calls from unknown numbers, so texting works better, please. In the meantime, I hope you are doing well. I pray for you always, and wish the best for you.
Sincerely yours,
Leah Hansen
